An Evening at Monticello
On Monday, March 5, 2012, The Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello will host the NNVAWI Conference for an exclusive early-evening tour followed by a private dinner on the grounds of the 18th century residence of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States and co-author of the Declaration of Independence. Situated on a mountaintop just outside of Charlottesville, Monticello is a 5,000-acre plantation that has been called "the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson-designed and redesigned and built and rebuilt for more than forty years." The plantation's gardens were a source of food and an experiment in ornamental and useful plants from around the world. Our tour will include the lives of enslaved people, free workers, indentured servants, and overseers who toiled at Monticello, as well as The Jefferson family.
This site has particular significance for the 18th NNVAWI Conference which is dedicated to Anne Cary Bankhead, a granddaughter of President Jefferson who suffered abuse by her husband, Charles. Jefferson wrote letters attempting to ensure his granddaughter's safety and provided her refuge from her husband in his home at Monticello.
Conference attendees may purchase tickets for An Evening at Monticello. The cost is $65.00 per person, which includes transportation, dinner, presentation and a private tour of Jefferson’s home and gardens. The presentation will be "Seeking Refuge at Monticello: Domestic Violence in the Jefferson Family, 1808-1826" given by Arlene W. Keeling, PhD, RN, FAAN, Centennial Distinguished Professor of Nursing.
This event is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor and The Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello. For more information on this historic site, please visit www.monticello.org.
