Module 6: Electroencephalographic Applications - Downloadable PDF

Description: This module is designed to help you: Explain the scientific underpinnings of EEG biofeedback (neurofeedback) including the source of the electrical activity and identification of the neuroanatomical structures that are important in understanding thalamo-cortical dynamics. List the EEG frequency ranges (in Hertz) using Greek letter designations where applicable and identify the associated mental states and/or behavior that corresponds to activity that occurs in those frequency ranges. Compare the information that can be derived from the raw EEG with the information provided by quantitative EEG analysis that provides spectral arrays of EEG activity and brain maps. Outline the effects of various classes of medications on the EEG. Identify the conditions that may benefit from EEG biofeedback intervention and distinguish between those that are validated by sufficient controlled research published in peer-reviewed journals and those that would still be considered experimental.

This module is designed to help you: Discuss biofeedback as a psychophysiological intervention. Describe the development of biofeedback as a science. Review basic principles of biofeedback training. Critique three primary theories of clinical biofeedback training. Analyze methods for determining the efficacy of biofeedback treatments.
