MNRS Founder - Sad News to Report

I am extremely saddened to announce the death of Beverly J. McElmurry, EdD, RN, FAAN who passed away on May 14, 2010.  Dr. McElmurry was a visionary leader regarding the need for collaboration among nurse scientists, mentoring the next generation of scholars, and disseminating research findings.  Her pioneering efforts in the mid 1970's with the conduct of several funded projects served as the catalyst for the establishment of MNRS.  She was the second MNRS President (1981-1983), received the MNRS Senior Researcher Award in 1987, and was honored in 2001 with the Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. McElmurry was Professor and Associate Dean, UIC CON Global Health Leadership Office at the University of Illinois (UIC) College of Nursing.  She served as Director for the UIC CON World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for International Nursing Development in Primary Care, was the Program Director for the UIC Minority International Research Training Program, and directed the College's Primary Health Care Research Training Program from 1996 to 2006.  She was Co-Director of the UIC AIDS International Training and Research Program focused on Chile, Indonesia, Malawi, and China.  She also assisted investigators with HIV/AIDS reduction programs in other countries as well.  Locally, she served as Director of the Chicago Health Corps and UIC VISTA programs (AmeriCorps initiatives) and implemented primary health care in urban communities through nurse-led collaborative teams working with residents and lay health advocates.

Over the years, she has had a global impact on the promotion of nursing and the provision of health care to at-risk populations through her advising of over 200 international scholars, many who have gone on to hold key leadership roles in nursing and health in their countries.

I know you will join me in offering her family our sincerest condolences during this sad time.

In recognition of Dr. McElmurry's many contributions to MNRS, donations in her memory may be made to the MNRS Foundation via the website or by check payable to the MNRS Foundation.

MNRS President
